Sorry we are a little late this week.

At my own peril I make these picks; they're all on the "upset alert list":

LSU (-5.0) vs. Ole Miss:

No more BS, no more cardiac comebacks, no more interceptions; it's time to crack the "Nutt" ...Let "Hold That Tiger" sound in the *deep* one last time; "Geaux Tigers"!

Penn St. (-14.0) vs. Michigan St.:

Penn St. has to win this one to ensure a Rose Bowl berth and, believe it or not, if an improbable but, not impossible chain of events transpire in the Big 12 or SEC, a long shot at the National Championship. If they lose they don't even get a cookie.

Oklahoma (-6.5) vs. Texas Tech:

The Rump Rangers haven't been able to putty in the "glory holes" in Norman since the mid-90's ... A turn-over could decide this high scoring, high stakes contest.

Tempting as some of the bigger games are this week, I’ve sworn off the ACC until the championship game, however, and I have had my fun in Big 12 and SEC as well as in the Mountain West. So, this week, I’ll take a decidedly “down market” approach with Scotty B’s Mid-Major Mania, a series of picks in a couple of conferences don't get much attention.

Tulsa (-28.5) v. Tulane
In this Conference USA matchup, the highlights for Tulane probably will be the free cable and breakfast at the team hotel. Tulsa’s offense ranks as one of the nation’s best; they love to throw (almost 3,400 yards and 38 TDs), run (242 per game) and score (49 points per game). Look for the Golden Hurricane, therefore, to overwhelm the lackluster Green Wave.

Houston (-19.5) v. UTEP
Last week, the Cougars had a shootout with Tulsa. Although Tulsa was smart enough to bring a gun to a gunfight, Houston was smarter, bringing a couple of batteries of heavy artillery. The result: Houston 70, Tulsa 30. In another Conference USA contest, the Cougars will host the Miners of UTEP and almost certainly dazzle their opponents with the same type of air show that generated six TDs and more than 400 yards last week and is directed by QB Case Keenum who seems adept at picking apart defenses.

Hawaii (-23.5) v. Idaho
With a 5-5 record, the Warriors aren’t the team they were last year when they were coached by June Jones and had Colt Brennan taking the snaps. Moreover, as far as offensive statistics are concerned, the teams appear to be evenly matched. That said, Idaho’s defense is wretched, giving up an average of 42 points a game. Saying “Aloha” to their WAC schedule at home, the Warriors (or, to be old school, the Bows) should have enough defense to shut down whatever offense the Vandals bring and enough offense to win this one handily.

Spartan Brian returns to his Motor City roots to be a Slappy for the home teams.

Sparty On +15 1/2
Although Michigan State will lose, their (apparent) "newer tougher attitude" won't let them get blown out by more than 2 touchdowns

The Blue Mafia +20 1/2
Forget the "In a rivalry game - anything can happen" nonsense. Michigan is going to get crushed, but I think they can keep it to within 3 touchdowns... maybe.

Boomer Sooner -6 1/2
Tech has some really good players, but this game should finally reveal them as the frauds they are. Anyone besides me rooting for a Texas Tech-LSU Cotton Bowl? Yikes, that could get ugly!
