No looking in the rearview mirror now:

Texas (-13.0) vs. Kansas:

The Longhorns have to keep winning so Oklahoma doesn't have a chance to catch them and in case Texas Tech stumbles; eyes front!

South Carolina (+23.0) vs. Florida:

Gators are on a roll but, Spurrier is Spurrier and the Gamecock defense might keep it close.

FSU (-7.0) vs. BC:

"Quick" defense vs. a "Big" defense; who turns it over and what offense finally figures out how to score?

Football has long been a very distant second to basketball in fans’ affection and attention in certain North Carolina institutions. However, over the past couple of years, the football programs at such schools as North Carolina, Wake Forest, and even Duke have been turning in performances that, if not world beating, are at times respectable (well, within the ACC anyway). So, this week, Scotty B takes another stab at figuring out the ACC, and, so takes a stroll down “Tobacco Row.” Smoke ‘em if you got ‘em!

Duke (+11.5) v. Clemson
In years past, this would have been a yawner of a game with the Tigers humiliating the Blue Devils. This year, Duke again inhabits the cellar of the ACC, but sputtering Clemson is ahead of only NC State in its division. Moreover, these two teams entered almost evenly matched in all categories—e.g., passing, rushing, and points scored—as well as overall record. I’ll tip the game to Duke because of its steadily, if not spectacularly, improving defense.

North Carolina (-2.5) v. Maryland
Yes, Maryland has been rock-solid at Byrd Stadium, posting a 5-0 record, and, yes, it has relatively strong defensive line. North Carolina, however, comes into College Park with a strong running game centered on Shaun Draughn and Ryan Houston and a decent passing attack helmed by Cameron Sexton, who threw for two touchdowns and 100 yards against Georgia Tech. Admittedly, the Terrapins have a tendency to play up or down to its opponents, but, considering how a so-so Virginia Tech team gave them fits last week, I don’t think they’ll play “up” enough to beat the Tarheels.

Wake Forest (-4) v. North Carolina State
Early in the season, Wake Forest looked strong, especially after posting a quality win over Ole Miss. Then, Wake began to look “weak” indeed, losing to Navy and Maryland (the latter by a shutout) and eeking out victories over Clemson and Duke. However, in ACC play, the Demon Deacons are tough on defense, giving up only 90yards rushing and 17 points per game. Furthermore, this week, Wake’s top running back, Josh Adams, returns to the line-up and, thus, adds a needed offensive boost.

My apologies! In my haste, I misnamed the area in which I am making my picks. It is, of course, "Tobacco Road."
