Week 10

Sorry running so late this week. The race is tight with a third of the season left to go.

Prowler's 11-1 run ended with a giant 0-3 turd. The good news is he maintained first place.

OMAC is making a surge with a 3-0 week.

Spartan Brian picked 6 games this weekend as he was out of town for week 8.

The Less Than Mighty Spartan Brian went 1-5. Bravo.

Luck is great but, luck, like glory, is fleeting:

Oregon (+3.0) vs. Cal:

The Ducks and the Golden Bears are close to being evenly matched; it should be an entertaining game.

Nebraska (+22.0) vs. Oklahoma:

Back in the glory days the winner of this game was usually headed for a National Championship; how times have changed.

South Carolina (-6.0) vs. Tennessee:

Both squads are having "issues on offense". This is the battle for the SEC-East "doormat"; even Vandy ranks ahead of both these teams.

The frontrunners are looking nervous. Will this weekend produce a last-minute “October Surprise”? Will the game be won with little time left on the clock? Are the polls correct? Do some teams have hidden weaknesses? Is the press in the tank? It is funny—isn’t it?—how college football and national politics share so many characteristics this weekend.
In recognition of the last weekend of Campaign 2008, Scotty B presents the First Pigskin and Political Prognostications Weekend. I’ll combine my thoughts on football and politics in this week’s picks, which feature teams from states that are prominent in Presidential politics or have interesting Senate races. Be warned; in politics, Scotty B will run against the mainstream. Think of it as my own version of the “Wild Hog” formation.

Missouri (-19) over Baylor
Football: After two consecutive losses—one a blowout, one a squeaker—the Tigers roared back last week against Colorado. I cannot see Mizzou’s scoring machine (42 points a game) losing much steam against Baylor’s lackluster pass defense. If the Tiger defense contains Baylor’s QB Robert Griffin, this game could turn into a rout.
Politics: John McCain is trailing in this bellwether state by 1.3%, well within the margin of error. Look for a late surge in Missouri’s “Little Dixie” and southeastern corner as well as the suburban GOP-leaning counties around Kansas City and Saint Louis to counter the Democratic turnout in Kansas City and Saint Louis.

Utah (-7.5) over New Mexico
Football: The Utes are coming off a bye week and looking to continue their unbeaten streak (8-0 this year). With a potent offense—224 passing yards and 184 rushing yards per game—that produces almost 40 points a game, the Utes should handle the Lobos.
Politics: Although neighbors at the Four Corners, Utah and New Mexico are quite different politically this year. Utah will deliver a resounding victory for John McCain by at least 30%. Some analysts put New Mexico firmly in the Obama column. Watch, however, for the Land of Enchantment to end up being decided by one to two points—or less.

Louisville (-13) over Syracuse
Football: After last night’s Bearcats-Bulls game, I make my first pick of the year in the Big Least with immense trepidation. Both teams are essentially lackluster affairs. However, the Cardinals have shown some offensive spark in many of their games this year. Moreover, last week against South Florida, Louisville's defense stuffed the Bulls’ running game at critical moments.
Politics: The reason I picked this game--Kentucky's barnburner of a Senate race. In it, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell locked in a tough fight against businessman Bruce Lunsford. Lunsford has kept the race tight—and McConnell under the magic 50%. However, Presidential polls show McCain with a lead approaching 14%. McConnell, who has been running hard in the past few weeks, should share McCain’s good fortune in the Bluegrass State and emerge victorious. Alas, when Mitch returns to the Senate, it will be to a diminished GOP caucus of 42 seats.
