Go Ugly Early

As a group we posted a delightful 0.33 winning percentage.  Nice.

"Scotty B" may need to be renamed "Pac 10 Mystic" after going 3-0 this week picking all Pac 10 games.

It's early yet, there's plenty of time to bounce back.

Go ahead and place your picks for week 2 in the comments.

Finally: APB out for the Chameleon...where you at bro?

First let me congratulate “ScottyB”; good job week 1 bro.

Unfortunately, the rest of us, as Prowler alluded to, didn’t exactly light the world on fire. I for one was completely blindsided by the beat-down Cinncy put on Rutgers; I misread that so badly that I actually wondered if I should keep participating with this august group. That said, it’s time to put on another pair of *Depends* and submit my week 2 hunches:

GT (-5.0) vs. Clemson:

I have no idea what may happen here; hopefully not another surprise beat-down. Go “Ramble’ in Wreck”!

Army (-1.0) vs. Duke:

This is the first time in about (5) five years that the “Black Knights” have been favored; albeit by (1) one point.

Air Force (+3.5) vs. Minnesota:

Any team that can hang 72 unanswered points on an opponent, even it’s Community College, can’t be completely blown-off. Falcons may just have a chance to hang with the “Golden Goofers”.

Roche's picks

NC -4.5 over U Conn
I thought it was football season, not women's basketball.

Air Force +4 over Golden Goofers
My usual early season team against Jeff's. Hopefully he will pick against me on this one and guarantee that at least one of us gets a win this week.

LSU -14.5 over Vandy
It could happen, right?

Thanks for the compliments, Prowler and OMAC. As to my success, it is further proof that, often, it's better to be lucky than good. And, yes, I have sent fruit baskets to Neuheisel, Tedford, and Harbaugh.

And, now, the picks:

After last week’s incredible run of luck, I have decided to stay out West. This week, however, I’ll be working at a higher altitude, in the midst of Scotty B’s Mountain West Madness. Let’s see if this conference’s men can “match the mountains”—and the early season hoopla.

Utah (-13) v. San Jose State

Three turnovers notwithstanding, the Utes came out of the gate strong last week, beating Utah State 35-17 and extending the nation’s longest winning streak. Utah also rang up an impressive 519 yards of total offense, an effort highlighted by the sterling performances of RB Matt Asiata’s (156-yards, two TDs) and WT David Reed (ten catches, 172 yards). New QB Terence Cain quieted concerns about his lack of experience (he transferred in from a Texas junior college) by throwing for 286 yards and two touchdowns. Utah’s defense performed well, too, giving up a combined 342 yards—almost 100 of which came on a single TD run early in the game. If Kyle Whittingham’s team can keep its collective mind on this game and away from next week’s contest against Oregon, it should have little trouble handling the Spartans.

Texas Christian University (-10.5) v. Virginia

The Horned Frogs ended the 2008 season with an 11-2 record in the ever-improving Mountain West and the No. 7 slot in the final AP poll. There’s more: they are tenacious on defense, giving up only eighteen touchdowns last year; that’s the third best in Division I. TCU’s offense has a running game strong enough to give TCU the reputation of a ball-control team. However, off-season, Gary Patterson emphasized improving the passing game centered on QB Andy Dalton (eleven TDs, 2,249 yards in 2008) and WR Jimmy Young (988 yards, five TDs in 2008). Against the sputtering Cavaliers, who are having trouble adapting to a spread offense and holding on to the ball (seven turnovers last week), therefore, the Horned Frogs have the potential to strike hard, fast, and often.

Brigham Young (-17.5) over Tulane

BYU's QB Max Hall was more than efficient last week against Oklahoma, hitting 68.4% of his passes, and he coolly ran the game-winning drive. The Cougar defense played superbly against Oklahoma, limiting the normally explosive Sooners to thirteen points and 256 yards of total offense. Admittedly, BYU’s running game did not do well, picking up a pathetic 28 yards. The Green Wave’s defense, however, is no powerhouse, giving up 37 points against Tulsa. If BYU head coach, Bronco Mendenhall, can keep his players focused, therefore, the Cougars should have an easy time in the Big Easy.

The Week of the Dag?

Spur Dog +7 at Dawgs

If the Cocks get past this game, the sky is the limit.

UM +3 over Notre Shame

Running up the score against WAC teams does not impress me.

Purdue +12 @ Fighting Daffys

Oregon looked terrible at Boise last week.
