Week 6
Sorry I am late this week. Just like LSU football, I dick around early but get my act together when it counts.
Looks like Scotty B got the big head this week. Nothing like the Wiz of Odds to rail on your parade.

Washington
Last week, the Wizard of Odds did indeed rain on my parade. For Week 6, therefore, I will pick a slate of games in a conference that, this season, has seen a lot of rain on many parades: Conference USA. So, grab your umbrella and galoshes as we run between the drops in Scotty B’s C-USA Mid-Season Monsoon.
UTEP (-2.5) v. Memphis
In its first four games of the season, UTEP definitely looked like a team on it way down, way down. Last week, however, against a high-flying Houston team, the Miners offense broke out in a big way, scoring 58 points and racking up an amazing 581 yards in total offense on the way to beating the Cougars. This week, UTEP takes its act on the road to meet the Memphis Tigers (1-4, 0-2 in conference). Commentators deem the Tigers’ defense “awful.” That’s good news for UTEP as they have a talented and tough RB in junior Donald Buckram. If QB Trevor Vittatoe can repeat the performance he had last week (or just come close) and the secondary shows some spark, then the Miners can turn their season around for good.
Navy (-14) v. Rice
Admittedly, Navy does not have the nation’s hottest passing game. It does have, however, an extraordinary ground attack that averages 230 yards per game and has as its leading rusher QB Ricky Dobbs. Calling his own number 23 times last week, Dobbs ran for 92 yards and scored a touchdown. Navy’s leading RB Marcus Curry is no slouch on the ground either, averaging 7.4 yards per carry. Last week, Rice managed to slow down Tulsa’s running game, but I think Navy’s offensive firepower will overwhelm the Owls’ linebackers. If Navy was able to keep Air Force in check offensively last week, it certainly has the ability to shut down Rice’s sputtering running game.
SMU (+7.5) v. East Carolina
For decades, the Mustangs have been a punch line. This year (June Jones’ second as head coach), however, they have shown some life, taking Washington State into overtime and posting a 2-2 record. In this contest against conference foe East Carolina, SMU can count on its solid passing game; helmed by QB Bo Levi Mitchell (and how Texas is that?) who has thrown for 1,219 yards this year, it averages 321 yards per game. East Carolina sits atop and is 3-2 overall, but its offense is rated last in C-USA and quarterback Patrick Pinkney’s efficiency could use some improvement. Moreover, East Carolina’s defense doesn't put much pressure on opposing QBs. Finally, the Pirates struggled to beat the likes of Marshall and FCS Appalachian State. If SMU can keep ECU out of its backfield, generate some sort of running game (the latter is a big “if”), and show the same mental toughness it did last week against TCU, there will be reason for celebration “On the Hilltop.”
