Week 5 (Redemption Week) Clemson, FSU and Penn St. were all favored last week, they all lost; they all NEED wins:
Clemson (-13.0) vs. Maryland:
Clemson better watch out because Maryland is a *desperate* team; the desperate are dangerous.
Penn St. (-4.0) vs. Illinois:
Penn St. needs to win or they risk becoming a joke; Joe-Pa needs to pray that the “Fighting I” doesn’t pressure his QB to much or it’ll be *Pick City*.
Florida State (-12.0) vs. BC:
BC is BC, what you see is what you’ve got. The real mystery will be which FSU squad shows up at Chestnut Hill this weekend.
CORRECTION !!!
My mistake, the line on FSU vs. BC should read:
Florida State (-6.0) vs. BC
Spartan Brian says take your kids’ school clothes money and your grandma bus fare to Vegas and retire early with these picks. Pretty much.
Georgia Pick ‘em
Have the Tigresses even come close to covering a point spread in the last two years?
Michigan State +1
The Spartanettes suck but need a win so desperately that they might show up against Big Brother
Georgia Tech -4
Miss State played their usual one good game a year last week
Welcome to Scotty B’s Big 12 Round Up. Some of the bigger name squads are taking the week off, making the pickings a little slim. However, you’re welcome to saddle up and ride along for a spell. Just remember, at the saloons we visit, the rule is: “No Boots. No Bolo. No Service.”
Arkansas v. (+1) Texas A&M
This year, the Aggie offense (574 yards per game, No. 1 in the country) has been fun to watch. For example, last week, QB Jerrod Johnson completed 23 of 29 passes (79.3%) for 290 yards and three touchdowns. In the first three games, he threw for an impressive 961 total yards, putting him on pace to beat last year’s mark of 2,435 yards by a wide margin. Unlike this week’s opponent, Arkansas, Texas A&M’s attack is not one-dimensional. Its rushing game is ranked seventh in the nation and produces 244 yards per game. Let’s be frank: so far, Texas A&M has played teams that can barely pass the laugh test. However, considering the apparent weakness of Arkansas’ defense and the improving Texas A&M defense, I’ll give the Aggies the benefit of the doubt this week.
Texas Tech (-35) v. New Mexico
After back-to-back losses against Texas and Houston, commentators no longer speak of Texas Tech in the same breath as Texas and Oklahoma. The Red Raiders’ chances of a Big 12 Championship are slim indeed, but they still possess the nation’s No. 1 passing game. QB Taylor Potts already has thrown for an astounding 1,602 yards and 13 TDs this season and averages 437 yards per game. Admittedly, Texas Tech’s running game is not formidable, but it still grinds out 120 yards a game. This week, the Red Raiders face a New Mexico team that is in turmoil after the head coach was accused of punching an assistant and that has a weak offense and a defense that allows an average of 47 points a game. Thirty-five points is a big spread, but, looking for redemption, Texas Tech could very well cover.
Baylor (-21) v. Kent State
In last week’s drubbing of Northwestern State, Baylor lost its star QB sophomore Robert Griffin for the season. Even before Griffin went down, the Baylor offense was hardly spectacular, but it did put up decent numbers, e.g., 339 combined yards a game. Back-up QB Blake Szymanski probably won’t throw much this week because the Bears can lean on a running game that with 209 yards per game is 20th in the nation and that features running backs Jay Finley (9.6 yards per carry) and Jarred Salubi (18.7 yards per carry). Kent State certainly poses a tougher challenge than Baylor’s most recent opponent; however, it struggled against FCS Coastal Carolina and was mauled by Boston College and Iowa State. The Bears, therefore, could keep their dream of a bowl bid alive for at least another week.
