Boomer Sooner -32 over USU

Hokies +2.5 over Blue Turf Smurfs

Remember the last time the Broncos came east for a big season opening showdown? 2005 at Georgia. Dawgs 48 - Smurfs 13. Will be closer this year, but BSU still loses.

Mizzu -11.5 over Zooker

Amazing this dude still has a job. But he did beat Saban in 2003.

Spartan Brian's Weekly Coin Flips:

Texas -28 at Rice
The average score of the last 8 of these has been like 52-10. Gotta ride the streak.

Michigan -3 vs. UConn
How the Mighty have fallen. This game was a rent-a-win when it was originally scheduled. Now, it may be the biggest of RichRod's career. Lose it and he is out.

BYU -3 vs. Washington
Random guess

Time to pick up where I left off last season; mediocrity:

LSU (-1.0) vs. UNC:
Butch Davis and the “Heels” will be tough defensively. Miles may have to pull a last minute trick out of his *mad-hat*.

Navy (-6.0) vs. Maryland:
I know this is wishful thinking, but you know I like the Mids. If Dobbs stays healthy they may have a shot. It’ll be tough since the Terps will be motivated to atone for 2009’s record of 2-10.

OK-State (-14.0) vs. Washington State:
Sham-wow-boys at home with a lot of new faces and need this win to get some respect.

Greetings, fellow Roadwarriors! It’s great to be back for another season. As usual, I will provide reckless picks, uninformed commentary, and overall insanity to the show.

As in past years, I'll open up the season with an all Pac-10 slate of picks. So, off to The Coast we go!

Oklahoma State (-14) v. Washington State
If the 2010 Cowboys look a little different to you than the 2009 edition, when they won nine games, but fell in the Cotton Bowl to Ole Miss, no need to schedule an appointment with your optometrist: you’re seeing things correctly. On defense, nine of the starters are new, and there are questions about the toughness of the line, especially at the guard position. There is a new quarterback, Brandon Weeden (who replaces Zac Robinson who threw from almost 2,100 yards and 15 touchdowns last year), a new offensive coordinator, and a brand new offensive scheme, known as “The Air Raid.” Certainly, therefore, many of the Stillwater faithful will come to this season opener with more than a few concerns. They can take heart, however, from the fact that the Cowboys are playing Washington State, the proud owners of three victories in the past two years.

TCU (-11) v. Oregon State
Last year, both of these teams glimpsed the top of the mountain. The Beavers were one win away from a trip to the Rose Bowl, and the Horned Frogs went 12-0 and came close to bursting Boise State’s balloon in the Fiesta Bowl. Both teams have ambitious goals for this year: Oregon State is aiming at a Pac 10 title, and TCU wants to return to a BCS bowl. Although the Horned Frogs lost some key players on defense, on the line and in the secondary, they still have considerable defensive experience and depth. Things look even better on offense where most of the starters from a unit that, on average, gained 456.7 yards and scored 38.3 points per game, are returning. One of those returning: senior QB Andy Dalton who threw for 2,756 yards, 23 touchdowns, and eight INTs in 2009; he also has a 29-8 record. The Beavers will no pushovers, of course. They come to Dallas with eight of eleven starters from last year on offense, including RB Jacquzzi Rodgers, who ran for 1,440 yards (5.3 per carry) and 21 TDs last year, and his brother, WR James Rodgers, who gained 1,034 yards from 91 receptions and scored nine touchdowns. However, given that an inexperienced Ryan Katz will be at the helm of OSU’s offense, the Beavers’ pass rush needs improvement, and the TCU defense will be hard-nosed, I give the advantage to the Horned Frogs.

Oregon (-34) v. New Mexico
The man in Eugene most looking forward to the season opener undoubtedly is Ducks’ head coach Chip Kelly. After winning the Pac-10 title last year, Oregon endured a wretched off-season with numerous players involved in crimes and “indiscretions”. Therefore, the Ducks begin their season with a new quarterback, Darron Thomas, and without the services of RB LaMichael James who scored fourteen touchdowns and ran for 1,546 yards last year. And, of that weren’t enough to furrow Kelly’s brow, the Ducks’ defense, which allowed an average of 34 points in its last five games in 2009, remains a question mark. Yet, the Ducks are stacked with talent on both sides of the ball, and, if Young can shake off the jitters early on, they should do well against a New Mexico team that, while somewhat recovered from a soap-opera year in 2009, remain weak in almost every area.
